  • Charlie Luck IV
    CEO and Chairman, Luck Companies - Founder, InnerWill

    Charlie Luck is the CEO and Chairman of Luck Companies, a purpose-driven, 100+ year-old family company. As the third-generation leader, Charlie guides the organization’s vision with a steadfast commitment to Values-Based Leadership. Under his leadership, Luck Companies’ mission is to ignite human potential through Values Based Leadership and positively impact the lives of others around the world.

    Charlie’s journey with the company began in 1980 as a summer trainee while attending the Virginia Military Institute, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduating in 1983, he competed professionally on the NASCAR circuit for four years before returning to the family business. Working hands on at the front line and through various departments readied him for role of President in 1995. Over the last 30 years, Luck Stone, the largest business unit of Luck Companies has grown to be the largest family owned and operated aggregate business in America.

    Beyond his work at Luck Companies, Charlie is the founder and Chairman of InnerWill, a non-profit organization focused on developing better people, braver leaders and a wiser world. His leadership philosophy has earned him numerous accolades, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, induction into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame as well as the Pit & Quarry Hall of Fame.

    A dedicated community servant, Charlie has lent his expertise to various boards, including the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association, Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance, YMCA, Saint Christopher’s School, St Catherines School, Virginia Military Institute’s Jackson-Hope Fund, Young Presidents Organization, and the Robins School of Business Executive Advisory Council.

    Charlie lives in Goochland, Virginia, with his wife, Lisa. Together, they are proud parents of three children and six grandchildren, continuing a legacy of family, purpose, and service.

     

  • Linwood Thomas
    Director, Greenfield Development

    Linwood Thomas has been with Luck Companies since 2023 and leads the Mid-Atlantic’s Greenfield Team’s growth efforts in Virginia and North Carolina. He graduated from George Mason University with a degree in Communications, Public Relations. Linwood has spent over 15 years working in local government with a focus around economic development where he helped facilitated the creation of new jobs and capital investment to the tax base along with supporting the growth of small businesses. Linwood is leading the project team in navigating the permitting process at both the state and local level. He resides with his son in Hanover County.

  • Richard Luck
    President, Luck Companies

    Richard proudly serves as President of Luck Companies, building on the foundation laid by three generations before him. With deep appreciation for the vision, hard work, and values instilled by his family, Richard honors their legacy by focusing on what matters most: people. His leadership is grounded in a commitment to cultivate a purpose-driven, people-first organization where every associate can discover purpose in their work, ignite their passions, and grow through their strengths. Richard believes that an authentic orientation towards others is the core belief that has driven Luck Companies to serve customers, communities, and associates. Richard is committed to modeling this mindset and stewarding it, knowing that it is what built the company and what will sustain its success in the future.

    Richard’s journey with Luck Companies began in 2008 as an intern while he pursued his degree in Business and Economics at the Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 2012. Over the years, he has gained hands-on experience across multiple regions - from Northern Virginia to Atlanta - serving in operations, sales, and leadership roles.

    As President, Richard leads with a deep commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable growth, while fostering a culture that empowers individuals and strengthens communities. His passion for people and innovation fuels the company’s ongoing evolution, ensuring that the legacy of excellence is both honored and reimagined for the future.

    Richard and his wife, Jenna, live in Richmond, Virginia, with their three children - Caroline, Thomas, and Georgia - where they enjoy building their own legacy rooted in family, connection, and impact on others.

  • Howie Long
    Greenfield Development Manager

    Howie Long has been with Luck Companies for 13 years. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech University with a degree in City/Urban, Community and Regional Planning. As a real estate development and planning professional, he has over 20 years of experience in both public & private sector planning, land acquisition and construction/project management. At Luck, Howie has worked on both their real estate development and greenfield growth teams. Within this role, his focus for this project consists of land acquisition, contract creation, property due diligence, planning and zoning, government relations and project permitting.

  • Lindsay Hart
    Community Engagement Specialist

    Lindsay Hart has been with Luck Companies for 12 years. She began her career in the scale office and later transitioned to the product support team, where she gained hands-on experience testing stone and soil products for both Luck Stone and Luck Ecosystems. In her current role as Community Engagement Specialist, Lindsay is committed to building meaningful relationships and educating the public about safe, responsible quarrying practices. She attended Virginia Commonwealth University, lives in Louisa County, and has deep roots in Hanover County, where she was born and raised. Her local insight and passion for preserving the region’s rural character are invaluable to her role in this project, where she helps foster understanding and collaboration between Luck Companies and the surrounding community.

  • John Pullen
    Chief Enterprise Strategy Officer

    John Pullen is Chief Enterprise Strategy Officer for Luck Companies and is responsible for mentoring the leadership team to ensure the success of our people-focused growth strategy and the Vision 2030 strategic planning process.  John is also responsible for the Merger and Acquisition activities across the enterprise in addition to his leadership of Luck Real Estate Ventures.

    Before being named Chief Enterprise Strategy Officer, John served as the Chief Growth Officer for Luck Companies, responsible for leading the company’s growth and expansion activities within Luck Companies’ Virginia to Georgia footprint. John has developed and led the strategic planning process for the company over two decades. 

    Joining the company in 1993, he has held various leadership positions related to real estate and business development, and he also served as Luck Stone President.

    Before joining Luck Companies, John served as Vice President of the InnsLand Group, a real estate development consulting company, and oversaw the development of commercial and residential projects in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

    John holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.  John also holds a Chief Digital Officer graduate certificate from Northwestern University

    He currently serves on the board of Sauer Properties, Inc. and has served on the boards of the VCU Rice Center, VCU Business School Foundation,  and the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA).  John was also a gubernatorial appointee, serving as a Commissioner of the Virginia Port Authority.

    John enjoys outdoor activities, traveling internationally, photography, fishing, and being physically active.  He and his wife, Paulette, live in Richmond, Virginia.  They have two adult daughters, Claire and Maddie. 

  • Lauren Hutchinson
    Property & Project Manager

    Lauren Hutchinson has been with Luck Companies for 7 years, where she started as a Coordinator in the Executive Office. With a degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Urban Planning, she’s always had a strong passion around real estate trends and processes. In 2022, she was able to make the leap from executive coordinating to Luck Real Estate Ventures, where she has completely immersed herself in the company’s real estate division as their Property and Project Manager. With a background in coordinating and a degree centered around planning, her strengths in project management play a critical role in ensure our team remains on track throughout the permitting process.

  • John LeGore
    Chief Executive Development Officer

    John LeGore is the Chief Executive Development Officer for Luck Companies.  Prior to this role, John served as the President of Luck Stone since 2014 and was responsible for leadership development, sales, operations, financial performance, and the growth of the business unit.

    John grew up in the mining industry outside Frederick, Maryland, where his family owned and operated a limestone quarry that dates back to the late 1800s. He was hired by Luck Stone in 1989 and since then has served in a variety of operations and leadership roles.

    He received his Bachelor of Arts in Business/Economics from Western Maryland College and later completed an executive education program from University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.

    John recently served on the board and Executive Committee for the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA). He is a past President and board member of the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance.

    John is married to his wife, Maureen, and they live in Frederick, Maryland.  They have two adult children, Karla and Justin, and a beautiful granddaughter Payton.  In his free time, he enjoys experiencing the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, and boating.

  • Abel Parker
    Director, Risk Management

    Abel Parker joined Luck Companies in 2000 and currently serves as the Director of Risk Management, providing leadership to Luck’s Risk Management, Facilities, and Aviation departments. The Risk Management team is responsible for leading and influencing Luck Company’s industry leading Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance programs. His team is also responsible for more traditional Risk Management related topics including managing the company’s corporate insurance program and contract review. Abel is active with the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association, having served as the chairman of the Safety and Health committee and Chairman of the NSSGA/MSHA alliance. He is also the current president of the Virginia chapter of the Risk Management Society. Abel has a BS in Biology/Environmental Science from The College of William and Mary and achieved his ARM certification in 2019. He lives with his wife Angie and their three children in Hanover County.

  • Joe Carnahan
    Chief Growth Officer

    Joe Carnahan serves as the Chief Growth Officer for Luck Companies where he oversees the execution of our growth strategy and Luck Stone’s South Carolina and Georgia operating regions. In his role as Chief Growth Officer, Joe oversees the work of Luck Companies’ Southeast Greenfield Team, Mid-Atlantic Greenfield Team, Community Engagement Team, and our Luck Ecosystems business. Joe is also responsible for the development and creation of Luck Companies’ Vision 2030 strategy.

    Over the course of his time with the company, Joe Carnahan has served Luck Stone at many levels, beginning as a co-op student, and then working full-time at the company as a Mining Engineer, Mining Engineering Manager, General Manager, and most recently as the Vice President of Luck Stone’s Southeast Region.

    Joe graduated from Virginia Tech in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Mining and Minerals Engineering. He earned his Professional Engineering license in 2009, and in 2013, he received his degree from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Executive Master’s program in Business Administration.

    He currently serves as a board member on the Georgia Construction Aggregate Association and is active with the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA) and the South Carolina Aggregate Association. He has also served on the board of the Alliance for the Chesapeake.

    When he’s not working, Joe enjoys golfing, snowboarding, traveling, cooking, camping, and spending time with his family. He lives in Richmond with his wife, Leah, and their daughter, Marjorie.

  • Mark Williams
    Environmental Manager

    Mark Williams has been with Luck Companies for 19 years. He graduated from Randolph Macon University and currently leads a team to ensure permitting compliance across our entire footprint while offering continual training to all associates of the company. Through this work Mark shares our company’s value of environmental stewardship with the community through our efforts in the schools, organizations, and recycling efforts. For this project, Mark will lead our efforts to obtain the necessary environmental permits, including water discharge, air quality emission and potential wetland stream impacts. During the permitting process, we also ensure that impacts to endangered species and cultural resources are minimized. Following completion of the permitting process, our team will submit required documents to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and lead the sites efforts in our Environmental Management System. Mark resides with his wife in Hanover County.

  • Erin Cheely
    Chief Financial Officer

    Erin Cheely is the Chief Financial Officer at Luck Companies. She leads our Finance department which consists of Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Treasury & Corporate Planning, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll. As CFO, Erin sets the strategy for capital spend and portfolio allocation, serves on the benefits and compensation committees, and oversees long-term financial planning.

    Prior to being named CFO, Erin worked across Luck Companies Finance department, collaborating closely with all levels of leadership on long-term financial projections, current year operating and capital budgets, investment decision support, and complex financial modeling.

    Before joining Luck Companies in 2017, Erin worked in food manufacturing and healthcare, holding various finance positions in accounting, financial reporting, financial planning, and M&A.

    Erin graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting. She also earned a Master of Accounting degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and has completed an executive certificate program through Harvard University.

    She currently serves on the Longwood College of Business Advisory Board, is a member of the Association for Corporate Growth Richmond and the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA). She also gives her time volunteering at Junior Achievement and has served as an Executive Business member for the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

    In her free time, Erin enjoys being with her husband, two sons, and her friends. In addition, she enjoys playing tennis, gardening, and the outdoors.

  • Chuck Stilson
    Director, Quarry Design & Development

    Chuck Stilson is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia and a Founding Registered Member of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering and a master’s degree in Geology, both from the University of Alabama, as well as an MBA from Temple University. Chuck has over 25 years of experience in the mining industry and has held a variety of roles with responsibilities including technical support, project management, and operational management. He joined Luck Stone in 2016 and currently leads the Quarry Design and Development team, overseeing mining and civil engineering, geology, surveying, drilling, blasting, rock breaking, riprap production, and site earthworks. Chuck serves as Luck Stone’s technical lead on the project.

  • Wanda Ortwine
    Chief Family Officer

     

    As Chief Family Officer, Wanda is responsible for leading the Family Office, which supports Luck Companies and the Luck family, in achieving their vision for future generations.  Specifically, the team provides expertise and leadership to identify, facilitate, and implement strategies to perpetuate the Luck family, their values, and business interests from generation to generation.  At the heart of this work is supporting all generations to live, lead, and work in alignment with their core values and chosen purpose.

    Wanda began her career with the company in 2007. Prior to joining Luck Companies, Wanda served as Chief Specialty Practice Officer, Director of Tax Services, and board member at Witt Mares, PLC.  

    Wanda holds a B.S. in accounting from Truman State University and a Master of Science in taxation from Arizona State University. Additionally, she has completed a Postgraduate Program in Bowen Family Systems Theory and Executive Leadership Coaching Certificate from Georgetown University.

    She currently serves on the board of the Luck Companies Foundation, InnerWill Leadership Institute, and on various family business education and advisory committees and forums, including Forge, SEFOF, and Center for Families Flourishing. 

    Wanda is married to Ted, and they have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.  They enjoy spending time with their family and traveling to new places.   A highlight is taking cooking classes in every country they visit, which allows them to engage in the culture and get to know the people more deeply.


     

  • Tony Gilman
    Regional Operations Manager

    Tony Gilman serves as Operations Manager for Luck Stone’s Central Region, overseeing operations from Richmond to Norfolk. With 24 years at the company, he brings deep experience and a strong commitment to operational excellence. A graduate of Patrick Henry High School and Liberty University, Tony and his wife are lifelong residents of western Hanover County. He leads operations for this project, drawing on his regional expertise and longstanding leadership.

  • Ryan Emmons
    Chief Digital Officer

    Ryan Emmons is the Chief Digital Officer at Luck Companies. He is responsible for overseeing Luck Companies’ IT strategy, ensuring that our technology aligns with the company's vision, strategy, and objectives, while also continuously seeking opportunities to enhance efficiency, drive innovation, and secure a competitive advantage through cutting-edge technologies. Additionally, Ryan leads our cybersecurity program to protect our digital assets, along with overseeing our Sales and Logistics Support team.

    Starting as a summer intern with the Electrical Engineering Team in 2004, he transitioned to a full-time role and officially joined Luck Companies the following year. Ryan has served in various roles and departments during his time at Luck Companies, which include Engineering, Marketing, Innovation, and most recently IT.

    Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and a Master of Business Administration degree, both from Virginia Commonwealth University.

    He currently serves on the boards of RVATech, the Goochland Education Foundation, and volunteers at his church.

    Ryan loves to travel and has been to five continents. He enjoys playing bass, golf, video games, and being on the water. He resides in Goochland with his wife, two sons and Gus, a French bulldog.

  • Mark Barth
    Chief Talent Officer

    Mark Barth is the Chief Talent Officer at Luck Companies, where he leads a team specializing in Human Resources, Risk Management, and Aviation. His mission is to cultivate a strong company culture that empowers associates to deliver outstanding service to customers.

    Previously, Mark served as President of Har-Tru Sports and Luck Stone Centers. Over his 25-year tenure at Luck Companies, he has held various leadership roles in human resources and business operations.

    Before joining Luck Companies, Mark had a career in sales and served in the United States Army, with assignments in the 8th Infantry Division in West Germany and the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

    Mark holds a bachelor's degree from the Virginia Military Institute and an MBA from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also holds SHRM-SPHR and ICF-ACC certifications.

    In his free time, Mark enjoys spending time with his family at the beach and staying active through various forms of exercise. He currently resides in Richmond, Virginia.

  • Doug Palmore
    President, Luck Stone

    Doug Palmore is the President of Luck Stone and leads the business unit with responsibility for our Values Based Leadership culture and advancing sales, operations, and customer service excellence alongside a team of talented associates.

    Prior to becoming President of Luck Stone, Doug served as a Vice President for Luck Stone where he oversaw our Luck Ecosystems business and Luck Stone operations in the southern half of Virginia and North Carolina. Since he joined the company in 1996, Doug has held a variety of support and operations roles including risk management, operational support, and customer experience. Before coming to Luck Companies, he worked as an Environmental Engineer for Virginia Geotechnical Services in Richmond.

    Doug holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia, a Master of Science in Civil/Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Richmond, and he is a licensed Professional Engineer. Doug is also a graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at UVA.

    Doug currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Luck Companies Foundation, the Executive Committee for the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA) and is chair of the NSSGA Membership Committee. Previously, he was Chair of the Board of Trustees for the VCU Rice Center.

    Doug enjoys being active, working and maintaining a family farm and forestland in Powhatan, Virginia. Doug resides in Richmond with his wife, Jennifer, and daughter Charlotte who is in medical school at VCU.

  • Scott Luberto
    Vice President of Strategic Initiatives

    Scott Luberto serves as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Luck Companies, where he drives the execution of major initiatives that align with the company’s long-term strategy. His work focuses on streamlining communication, facilitating effective decision-making, and managing major projects that ensure the company’s success. Through these efforts, Scott keeps leaders focused on the priorities that drive the organization forward.

    Before stepping into this role, Scott held various leadership positions at Luck Companies, including Director of Associate Development, where he led programs that cultivated leadership and empowered associates at all levels. With a diverse background in Human Resources, Operations, Technical Training, and Leadership Development, Scott brings a comprehensive understanding of the business and its people.

    A graduate of Davidson College, Scott is passionate about helping others reach their full potential. Originally from Upstate New York, he now resides in Richmond, Virginia, with his wife, Amanda, and their dog, Miley.

    Outside of work, Scott enjoys practicing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

  • Tom Epperson
    Vice President of Culture

    Tom Epperson is the Vice President of Culture where he will oversee the Marketing Team and continue his work leading InnerWill.

    Prior to this role, he served as the President of InnerWill Leadership Institute, having over twenty years of experience as a leadership coach, facilitator, and speaker, and regularly works with clients to help transform leaders and their organizations.

    Tom believes that leadership is a choice, not a title, and that our responsibility as leaders is to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.

    Tom is a certified business coach and has a Doctorate in Leadership from The George Washington University. Tom is currently an adjunct instructor in Virginia Commonwealth Universities’ Executive MBA Program.

    Tom works hard to be a great husband and father; he’s married to a strong, creative woman and has two fantastic boys.
