Better people. Braver leaders. Wiser world.

Over the years, Luck Companies’ message and VBL work has reached thousands of individuals and organizations. Recognizing our opportunity to share this life-changing work with others inspired us to establish a non-profit leadership institute. In 2015, in collaboration with a community of VBL practitioners, we launched InnerWill to pursue a mission to develop better people, braver leaders, and a wiser world. InnerWill uses Values Based Leadership to teach, coach and support the development of those interested in transforming both their life and the lives of others.

Working with the Community

Our commitment to the communities we serve is deep and extensive.

We study, explore, and learn about the communities we enter to understand their past and imagine the possibilities for the future. We engage and partner with community leadership, government and institutions to turn visions into collaborative realities.

Whether we’re working on a new bridge project or one of Virginia’s many highways, we take a long-term approach to our business to ensure that the community benefits from our work for decades to come.

Additionally, each year, we provide sponsorships and product donations to our communities. We take pride in the role we play to help build and sustain the infrastructure of a healthy society and the people who live in it.

 The Luck Companies Foundation

We support our associates and the organizations that mean the most to them by matching donations from associate giving. In addition, the Luck Companies Foundation offers grants and charitable donations to purpose-driven organizations.

The Luck Companies Foundation also partners with non-profits to lead work that results in long-term, positive outcomes for our local communities. We focus in two main areas — Values Based Leadership and Environmental Stewardship.

What We Are Looking For

With nearly 100 years of experience and industry-leading success, our aspirations for growth will enable us to create opportunities for our associates, deepen and strengthen our operational excellence and ensure sustainable success for future generations.

We take a long-term, thoughtful approach to this work and hold ourselves to the highest standards by planning for the evolution of our sites, the welfare of the environment, and the safety and prosperity of our associates and our communities.

Meet Our People

  • Darryl Sanders
    Foreman, Luck Stone Division

Why do you work for Luck Companies?

I work for Luck Companies because it is a company which provides a tremendous amount of growth opportunities and education for their employees.

Describe your career path with the company and why it's worked so well for you.

Well honestly I didn't think that I would stay here for very long. Now it's more than 9 years. I started off as a blaster at our Powhatan location. At that time the company was wide open and I was excited to be a part that. I then became a foreman trainee and transferred to Burkeville, which was a learning experience in itself. After spending some time there, Rockville became my home for a short time. I then became a foreman at our Burkeville location for almost 5 years. Now, I am currently a foreman at South Richmond. During my time here at Luck Companies I have seen this company rolling out the rock as well as trying to figure out what we will do next. We were strong then and continue to be. Being challenged and meeting your goals makes you feel good about what you've accomplished.

Give us one piece of advice for being successful with Luck Companies.

Bring your best every day, and if you don't have the answer, just ask someone who does.

Tell us something cool about yourself – on a personal note.

I am a UVA graduate who honestly loves VIRGINIA TECH-LOL. I'm the type of person who likes to have fun while you work. If you don't laugh during the shift something is wrong.

  • Andrew Storey
    Quarry Design and Development Manager

Why do you work for Luck Companies?

With a mining engineering degree, I could go practically anywhere in the world and find a job, but I work for Luck Companies because of the intangibles. Luck gives me a chance to do work that I like, grow personally, help out the community I grew up in and have a good time doing it.

Describe your career path with the company and why it's worked so well for you.

I started with Luck during a Co-Op in the Mining Engineering group when I was still at Virginia Tech. That time helped me figure out that mining was something that I wanted to do as a career and decide that Luck was where I wanted to be. When I started full time, I spent a year in training at the Fairfax plant learning the ropes of operations. I drove the equipment, ran the plants, blasted and did pretty much every job at the site, or at least got a taste of it. It was a very intense training program but the payoff is huge. Now that I'm back in the office doing more design work, I am enjoying the new challenges. I think everything has gone so well this far because I like variety, and I have been involved with new things practically every day since I started.

Give us one piece of advice for being successful with Luck Companies.

I think that a successful person with Luck is excited by challenges. You have to enjoy tackling obstacles or you aren't going to enjoy working for Luck.

Tell us something cool about yourself – on a personal note.

I love the water. One day, I hope to retire on either a river or lake. I own two kayaks and have kayaked through the North Woods of Maine and the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.

  • Ryan Emmons
    Director, Information Technology (Luck Companies)

Why do you work for Luck Companies?

It's a great company with lots of great people that truly make coming to work fun. The job is challenging and there are lots of opportunities for growth and development. Luck Companies invests heavily into each associate's personal development. It's very cool to work for a place where the use resources to help you become the best version of you possible.

Describe your career path with the company and why it's worked so well for you.

I started in Engineering, then moved to Marketing, and am now the Director of Business Integration on the IT team. Being able to chase my passions even if it means moving to different departments has helped keep me motivated and challenged.

Give us one piece of advice for being successful with Luck Companies.

Be willing to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. That is when you grow the most.

Tell us something cool about yourself – on a personal note.

I love to play the bass guitar and have traveled to 5 out of the 7 continents. I also love CrossFit and playing tennis. Technology is one of my main passions in life. Whether it's video games, iPads, or computers, I love using technology to make life easier and more enjoyable.

Apply For a Grant

THE FIRST STEP: Please complete and submit a "Request for Funding" form by clicking the “Apply For Grant” button below. The request should succinctly describe your organization and the proposed project, with an explanation of its relevance to specific Foundation areas of focus. Please also include an estimate of the funds being requested. Applications that do not address a specific topic within our areas of focus will not be reviewed.

All specifications in the "Request for Funding" form must be met in order for us to review your request.

HOW IT WORKS: The Foundation receives many more grant requests than it can fund. Submitting a formal grant request does not mean that funding will be approved.

We will review requests four times a year, and preference will be given to those that affect our areas of primary emphasis - Values Based Leadership and Environmental Stewardship. Long-term positive impact on the communities in which we operate is a critical to our consideration of each grant request. We also expect recipients to provide an annual report on long-term impact and project effectiveness.
